The Definitive CSS Galleries List

April 8th, 2006

Update: Wish I had though of this, but Nick Dunn has aggregated most of this lists into one feed at CSS Galleries, he has even done some work to combine the duplicates into one entry.

Back in the day when you needed inspiration for your site there were places like Cool Home Pages and How Design where you could see what and how other designers were doing things. With web standards and CSS becoming more the norm for building your site a lot of CSS galleries have emerged over the last year. One of the great things about the web standards movement is that alot more people are willing to share the work that they have done with CSS and XHTML. So if you are a designer or developer looking for inspiration for your latest project here is my (somewhat) definitive list of CSS galleries. There are 40 galleries on this list, most have some type of RSS feed, so you can keep track of them with your favorite RSS reader.

Updated: Apparently I had a brain fart and forgot CSS Beauty. I also added a couple more - I guess to truly be definitive I have to include Zen Garden.

CSS Galleries Galore

**Not all CSS based but has a different approach to inspiration.

Update: Alexander pointed out (indirectly) that this list will never be complete. So check back as I add new items.

I also love the CSS Beauty gallery for great inspiring CSS sites: http://www.cssbeauty.com/gallery/

That’s a pretty good list, a few of them I hadn’t seen yet (surprisingly). I’ve got my own list going, but mostly just by way of keeping each site’s gallery feed in a folder called “Design Inspiration” in NetNewsWire, that way I don’t need to check each site every day (which I used to do, causing me to waste entire mornings).

I might have to post all of the ones I check on my own site at some point. Thanks for sharing yours!

Katie: Crap how did I forget about CSS Beauty?

Patrick: Thanks. I have a couple more I forgot to add because they don’t have a feed. I have to go directly to the site to check.

    What about my site: http://www.inspirationking.com/ ? :)

That’s spooky. I just saw your site on the CSS Reboot yesterday. Well I am adding it now.

I guess it was only a matter of time before an idea like this popped up. I was so fed up with checking all of the different CSS gallery sites, so I’ve built a site to index and aggregate them all (with help of the list above).

    I hope it’s useful for someone :-)

  • Liquid Designs

[…] There there is the insane amount of fixed width sites I receive. Most of them are in a foreign language, so it’s safe to assume that the submitter does not speak English and has no idea there are guidelines on submitting sites. Still, I do get some in English and combined these sites make up about 80% of the submissions I receive. That means that for every liquid or elastic site someone sends me, I get 4 fixed width sites as well. Does this sound annoying? Did it sound annoying the last time I mentioned it? I can tell that a lot of designers, upon completing a site, will start with a list of CSS galleries and run down it, blindly submitting to each one. I can’t blame them; there’s about 5 billion CSS galleries and they all provide a quality inbound link from a site with a decent Pagerank. I just wish they would recognize that Liquid Designs is not a typical CSS gallery. I have a standard here. A consistent one. Respect. […]

[…] Web Design Showcase: CommentsMarch 2, 2007 There are literally hundreds of CSS galleries on the web (don’t believe it? — check out this list, which is far from complete). […]

You came up with a great list of CSS sites. I love them. I just wrote an article that lists 180+ resources online for design inspiration and I liked your article so much that I added your link to the article. I found many sites in your list that I hadn’t even known about before…and the comments after the article were very helpful as well. I know that my users will love your list and will find much use out of the rest of your site as well. Keep up the great work.

    Thanks.
